In the series, everything on Earth is wiped out by a devastating nuclear war 97 years ago. In the weeks before the war, twelve space stations occupied Earth’s orbit. These are the only known survivors. The space stations were merged into one single station known as “The Ark”, where about 2,400 people are housed. No matter how severe or minor the crime, all crimes are punishable by death (“floating”) unless the perpetrator is under the age of 18.

An expedition sent to the surface to determine if Earth is habitable is deemed expendable after the Ark’s life support system fails. One hundred juvenile prisoners are sent to the surface in order to test the Ark’s life support system one last time.

After arriving at a mysterious planet, the teens see it for the first time. A tentative community struggles to form in the midst of the dangers of this rough new world. Yet, they discover that humankind has not been wiped out. Some survivors of the war still live on Earth today, known as “grounders”.
