Storyline
On their quest for the Book of Vishanti, America Chavez and a version of Dr Stephen Strange are pursued by a demon in a parallel universe while travelling through the space between universes.
During the battle with the octopus demon, Strange is killed, and Chavez unintentionally opens a portal that transports her and Strange’s corpse to Earth-616, where the version of Strange from that universe saves Chavez from an octopus demon with the assistance of the Sorcerer Supreme, Wong.
He explains to her that she is being sought by demons because she possesses the ability to travel throughout the multiverse. Strange consults Wanda Maximoff for assistance after noticing runes of witchcraft on the demons, only to discover that she is the one who is responsible for the attacks.
Maximoff believes that by controlling the multiverse with Chavez’s power, she will be able to reunite with Billy and Tommy, the children she created during her time in Westview. Maximoff has been the Scarlet Witch since acquiring the Darkhold and becoming the Scarlet Witch.
When Strange refuses to hand over Chavez, Maximoff launches an attack on Kamar-Taj, killing a large number of sorcerers. Chavez and Strange are accidentally transported across the multiverse to Earth-838 by Chavez’s actions.
Maximoff uses the Darkhold to “dream-walk,” in which she assumes control of her Earth-838 counterpart, who lives in a suburban setting with her own Billy and Tommy, as well as other characters. A surviving sorceress makes the ultimate sacrifice in order to demolish the Darkhold and end the dream-walk.
Maximoff then forces Wong to accompany her to Mount Wundagore, which is believed to be the source of the Darkhold’s strength. Dr Strange and Chavez are apprehended and brought before the Illuminati, a secret society that includes Earth-838’s Sorcerer Supreme, Karl Mordo, and other members of the Earth-838 royal family, including King Blackagar Boltagon,
Captain Maria Rambeau, Doctor Reed Richards, and Professor Charles Xavier. They explain that Earth-838’s Strange accidentally triggered and narrowly averted a universe-destroying “incursion” by recklessly using their universe’s Darkhold in an attempt to defeat Thanos.
They decided to kill him in order to prevent him from causing further harm, and Mordo believes that Strange from Earth-616 is in a similar position to him. Maximoff re-establishes her dream-walk using the power of Mount Wundagore and arrives in the body of her Earth-838 counterpart before they have a chance to pass judgment on her.
She eliminates all of the Illuminati with the exception of Mordo. When Strange and Chavez are captured, they are aided in their escape by the Earth-838 counterpart of Strange’s ex-fiancée Christine Palmer, a scientist who is a member of the Illuminati.
Strange, Chavez, and Palmer travel to the interdimensional space between universes in search of the Book of Vishanti, which is the antithesis of the Darkhold. However, Maximoff appears and takes over Chavez’s mind, using her powers to send the others to a universe that has been destroyed by the incursion.
Maximoff returns to Earth-616 and begins the spell that will grant him Chavez’s powers. Strange defeats the alternate Strange from the destroyed universe, who has been corrupted by his universe’s Darkhold, and then uses this Darkhold to dream-walk into the corpse of the alternate Strange who was with Chavez earlier in the episode.
After saving Chavez from Maximoff with the assistance of Wong, Strange encourages her to use her abilities. Chavez transports Maximoff to Earth-838, where she witnesses Billy and Tommy flinch away from her, crying out for their real mother.
Maximoff finally gives in and uses her powers to bring Mount Wundagore crashing down, destroying all copies of the Darkhold throughout the multiverse and, in the process, seemingly sacrificing herself as well. Strange tells Palmer that he still loves Palmer from his universe, but that he is too afraid to have a real relationship with her.
Palmer then returns to Earth-838. As the surviving sorcerers continue their training, they are joined by Chavez, and the damage done by Maximoff to Kamar-Taj is repaired sometime after that. As a result of his use of the Darkhold, Strange gains the ability to see with his third eye.
Midway through the film, Strange is approached by a sorceress[N 3] who informs him that his actions have triggered an incursion that he must assist in resolving. Strange agrees to assist. Strange joins her on her journey into the Dark Dimension.
